Our green peninsula

The Lizard Peninsula is unique, stunningly beautiful and one of Cornwall's special places.

It is our green peninsula, and we can make it even greener.

The Lizard's wind farm at Goonhilly Downs has operated successfully since 1993. producing very large quantities of clean, green electricity for local consumption.

It has become part of the landscape, has no affect whatever on farming and other land use.

Investigations by Helston-based Cornwall Light & Power, which owns and manages the wind farm, show that five times the current output could be achieved using half the number of turbines.

In an average year a repowered Goonhilly would be able to produce electricity equivalent to the average annual consumption of all households on The Lizard with plenty more to spare for Helston and Porthleven.

Currently Goonhilly's 14 turbines have a total capacity of 5.6 Megawatts. These could be replaced by 7 new turbines - taller and turning more slowly.

Each would have a capacity of up to 3 Megawatts, giving a combined capacity of approximately 21 Megawatts - annually producing the equivalent of the consumption of over 10,500 Kerrier households.

The Goonhilly site has a world-class wind resource which we can use to reduce imports of electricity from power stations in Somerset, Wiltshire, Wales and even further afield.

There is no definitive timetable at this stage, but if the project went into planning by the end of this year it could be constructed and operational during 2009.

Displays describing the project will also be on view at a number of public sites in the area, the locations of which are currently being discussed, and progress can be followed on the website.

Visitors are encouraged to make their comments on the day or any time via phone or email.
