A planning application for turbines on land at Cheverton Down, near Shorwell, has been registered by the Isle of Wight Council. Cheverton Down is the site of an existing planning consent for three turbines but the new planning application would allow for modern turbines to be installed. Summary of site
Location: Cheverton Down, Shorwell, Isle of Wight
Cornwall Light & Power currently has planning permission to build a small wind farm comprising three turbines at Cheverton Down. However, this planning consent originally dates from 1993 and the technology specified is no longer available as new, which would mean importing second-hand turbines from the mainland. Wind turbine technology has moved on considerably over the last decade and the machines manufactured today are more efficient and able to generate significantly more clean electricity.
For this reason, we intend to submit a revised planning application for three modern turbines which would produce ten times more electricity and achieve ten times the carbon dioxide saving than the turbines which were originally consented in 1993. As our preferred turbine supply partner, the site would also provide a base for research & development by Vestas, which in turn would support local manufacturing and further the island’s progress towards becoming a world leader in renewable energy technology, in line with the Eco Island strategy.
