Summary of site

Cornwall Light and Power (CLP) is currently looking at the potential to place wind turbines on land at Langthwaite Farm near Millom in Cumbria.

Electricity generated by the turbines would go into the local distribution network and could be sufficient to power over 11,000 households in the surrounding communities each year.¹

¹ Based on an example scheme consisting of six 3 megawatt turbines. Figure for numbers of households potentially served based on Government figures for average household consumption

What's happening?

May 2010

Our first public exhibition in February this year allowed us to get a good understanding of local people's views on our plans to harness the strong wind resource at this site. We have been through the comments received and also conducted additional on-site specialist studies which have confirmed to us that this is an ideal site for a small scale wind farm. Our work has included:

  • A full Environmental Impact Assessment
  • A study into the cultural heritage of the area
  • A landscape and visual assessment
  • An Access and Transport assessment

We have also commissioned an independent company to produce detailed and accurate visualisations of the proposed turbines to industry standards from a number of viewpoints in order to demonstrate how the scheme would fit within the local landscape. These will be available to view at the exhibition.

Our next public exhibitions will take place at Millom Network Centre on Friday 4 June, 12pm-8pm, and at Kirksanton Village Hall on Saturday 5 June, 10am-2pm. We will also be providing details of the contents of our planning application to demonstrate how your views have influenced our final proposals and to give you an opportunity to ask further questions of the development team. Following the exhibitions, we will be submitting a formal planning application to Copeland District Council.

Langwaite Plan

February 2010

Initial plans for Langthwaite were presented to the public at exhibitions on the following dates:
Friday 5 February (2pm-8pm) - Millom Network Centre
Saturday 6 February (10am-2pm) - Kirksanton Village Hall

Two possible layouts for the site were presented, one for six 3 megawatt, 125m turbines and one for eight 2 megawatt, 100m turbines. We requested feedback from local people on these schemes and will be analysing the responses in the coming weeks. If any local residents have further questions or thoughts on the two proposals they are very welcome to contact the development team at any time.
