South Sharpley
Wind Project

May 2008 - new plans prepared following public consultation in March

Location

South Sharpley Farm, near Seaham, County Durham

Summary of site

Cornwall Light and Power is applying for planning permission to install four wind turbines on land at South Sharpley Farm. The proposed wind farm would provide enough clean, emissions-free electricity to power 4,850 homes and would contribute 7.5 megawatts (MW) towards the UK's renewable energy targets for 2010, and accelerate progress towards County Durham’s 2015 and 2020 targets.

Cornwall Light & Power currently operates two wind turbines at nearby High Sharpley Farm which opened in January 2007. With a new scheme at South Sharpley, even more households could benefit from renewable electricity.

Facts and Figures

The proposed wind farm development at South Sharpley would bring with it a number of key benefits:

  • 7.5 megawatts of installed renewable energy capacity, a significant contribution towards both national and regional targets
  • enough clean, emissions-free electricity to power the equivalent of 4,850 local homes
  • economic benefits for the local area during the construction process, including the creation of new jobs
  • a considerate and carefully designed wind project which the local community can be proud of
